Surgical orthodontics (orthognathic surgery) treats and corrects abnormalities of the facial bones, specifically the jaws and the teeth. Often, these abnormalities cause difficulty associated with chewing, talking, sleeping and other routine activities. Orthognathic surgery corrects these problems and, in conjunction with orthodontic treatment, will improve the overall appearance of the facial profile.

Orthognathic surgery is typically performed in a hospital setting under general anesthesia. Depending on what is called for, upper or lower jaw bones can be separated, repositioned, taken from or added to in order to promote a healthy bite and good jaw function. Other facial bones may also be changed, repositioned or augmented to promote better facial symmetry and tooth alignment. After the necessary healing time, usually one to two months, braces are used to make any minor final adjustments needed. These braces are usually removed three to six months after surgery is performed.
